How and why do certain kitchen trends take hold? One reason is that they are seen. With social media we are exposed to new trends everyday. Another reason are global influencers. We see entire portfolios of designs that tell stories everyday. These leaders in design or architecture create excitement around kitchens.

The third reason is what manufacturers and retailers are bringing to market. These developments can take 2-3 years depending on the complexity of the product line up. We see new advancements in cooking, surface materials, finishes, tile, etc. everyday in our studio.

In general what’s coming are products that are more energy efficient, sustainable and convenient. Today let’s look at color trends in the kitchen area and why we were influenced to create our designs this year.

One of the biggest color trends we saw this year was the green kitchen. Many people asked us why? I see two possible influencers in the market that featured green before anyone else. Famed designer Kelly Wearstler designed a celebrity kitchen with green and gold that was featured in editorials all over the country.

Green has been a popular color for Wearstler in the past - remember the Santa Monica Viceroy? We were so impressed with the sophisticated use of color and texture there. Simple black, white, and that midtone kelly green-created a Hollywood regency pool area that one never forgets.

I specifically remember noting the color scheme while in the dining room eating an amazing chicken caesar salad. No one was using kelly green at the time. We hadn’t seen it since the 60s/70s so it felt so crisp and fresh.

Today with Instagram, we see trends pop up from all over the world. One of the biggest kitchen trends was a company named DeVol Kitchens out of the United Kingdom. Their slimmed and simplified lines of their shaker door styles are just what American needed to modernize past traditional style.

Mixing a dark evergreen with black struck a note in the minds of designers and homeowners trying to update their all white kitchens.. Never before have we seen so many pinned green kitchens. We’ve had several requests for green and still - the ever popular black and white.

Are black and white kitchens still popular? Yes - far and away the most popular color scheme in the U.S. We are also seeing a big jump in light wood cabinets like a soft stained beech tree color. No matter what the wood species, a pale matte finish is all the rage.

This may be a trend coming from the coasts. It’s a sort of beachy feel, and that style has always been popular. The modernization of the driftwood type finish to a more sophisticated casual chic is in style. This wood tone paired with white feels approachable and attainable and is actually a twist on the all-white farmhouse style that has been so popular.
