What is Luxury? Something inspiring or just expensive and new?
San Francisco’s Proper Hotel
Part 4 of 4
By Barbara Schmidt
While I was in San Francisco I thought I should stop by the Proper Hotel and check out the common areas. I was excited to see how Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler approached the spaces with scale and texture.
Upon entering The Proper I was surprised to see how intimate the lobby space is – almost like entering someone’s living room. The space was defined by seating areas for conversation but left wide open meaning there isn’t much privacy.
My eyes were delighting by all the color and texture in the lobby area. So many pinks with all sorts of abstract shapes. I loved the artwork groupings but thought it was sort of the same treatment on two walls. It would have been great to see one larger piece and more white space. See hotel’s lobby shots here
My husband and I were very surprised by the incredible service we received in the blah blah bar. We wandered in and asked if we could have a drink. They were closed they said but they’d be happy to serve us.
Bartender climbs up to grab the recommended local St. George Spirits for Michael’s cocktail.
The bartender suggested a special local gin St. George Spirits. He had to climb the ladder up a story to get it so I quick grabbed a shot of him way up there. He mixed me a New York Sour that was so delicious I had to have another.
It is here that we learned that we just missed Kelly Wearstler herself. She’d been at the hotel just days earlier to check up on the furnishings and installations. Checking her instagram I realized she’d had her portrait shot in the bar just feet from where we were sitting. Ships passing in the night!
