The Day I Ate Sqirl
I remember jumping into the rental van with a paper bag soaked and stained from the butter oozing from the cake. I was so excited that I sat back in the driver’s seat and unwrapped the heavy cake and took a bite right then and there before I even started the van’s motor.
Although my teeth ached from the sweetness, my mind exploded from the flavor. What was in this South African delight? Hmmm. Malva Pudding Cake. A specialty that Sqirl chef and owner Jessica Koslow created with her own apricot jam. It is so good that I can still taste that flavor – so rich and so chewy.
I was on a Los Angeles photo shoot for client Le Creuset and I did have a brief moment to meet Knowles as we were shooting in the Los Angeles Sqirl location. It’s tiny spot and we hardly had room for just the photographer and client with loads of cast iron product. I had to shake her hand and hit the road so we could set up for the next location and leave room to finish the shoot at Sqirl.
This is how I found myself driving through L.A. with oozing pudding cake dribbling down the front of my shirt. I couldn’t put it down because it was so addictively good. I knew I had to finish it in the van because I couldn’t bring it into the next restaurant location.
My sticky hands smeared goo all over the steering wheel and my phone. “Are you there yet?” the producer asked. Oh man, I couldn’t get my phone to work with all the sweet fingerprints on the screen. Thumbs up emoji to the rescue!
